Crowns and Bridges

Crowns

A crown is commonly called a “cap“, which is a tooth like covering placed over an existing tooth of the patient.Crown helps protect the underlying weak toothand can be used to strengthen a badly decayed tooth or restore the appearance of a fractured/chipped tooth or root canaled tooth.

To perform the crown procedure, the dentist prepares the tooth from all the sides and makes a molded impression of the teeth to send to a dental laboratory. A temporary crown is created during this visit to temporarily protect the tooth while the final restoration is being made in the dental laboratory. Once completed, the crown is first tried in the mouth and then finally cemented or adhesively bonded at a later visit.

A recent technology, CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design/manufacturing technology) has evolved to display a 3-D picture of the teeth. A restoration is then created through milling of a ceramic block.

Crowns are made of 3 types:

  • METAL FREE/ ALL CERAMIC CROWNS— “All-Ceramic” crowns are very popular these days. They are free of metal and yet extremely strong made of Lithiumdisilicate( IPSe.max Zirconia ( 3M Lava, Zenostar)
  • PFM/ PORCELAIN FUSED TO METAL CROWNS – Here the porcelain is bonded to a metal shell. It is a time-tested procedure with good results.
  • METAL CROWNS – These crowns are not very popular due to bad aesthetics, but could be used for the last molars as they have excellent strength to withstand forces in the high stress areas.

At Smayate Dental Clinic, our specialists take utmost care to develop the crown that is the best fit with no micro leakages and also to ensure that the crown lasts longer. The dentist will first prepare the tooth and then take an impression of it. The crown is then custom made for you in the dental laboratory by a senior ceramist. It is made to match your other teeth as closely as possible.

Bridges

Gaps in the teeth can be very embarrassing, and can also affect the health of your teeth and gums. It may affect your bite, or put strain on the teeth around it and cause both decay and gum disease with the foodthat gets caught in the gap.

A bridge is a custom made prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth. It rests on the neighbouring teeth on either side of the missing tooth for support much like the pillars supporting a bridge on a river. The neighbouring teeth are prepared as crowns to serve as abutments (pillars) to hold the missing tooth in place.

In simple terms, a bridge is like having two crowns with a false tooth in between and cemented on the supporting teeth. A bridge remains in your mouth for many years and also needs cleaning every six months (ofcourse without removing it). There are various material options available like metal free Zirconia ( 3M Lava, Zenostar) , porcelain fused to metal .

The way your teeth are replaced depends on where they are in the mouth, and the condition of the other teeth.

If you are a suitable candidate, you can also have teeth that are screwed to the jawbone, which are known as implants

Why is a crown and bridge treatment necessary?

A permanent tooth can be lost due to a number of reasons like dental decay, gum disease, accident or fall. This results in the shifting of the neighbouring teeth due to change in the chewing force.

The tooth in the opposing arch either above or belowthe lost tooth can begin to move up or down or out of the socket this phenomenon is called supra-eruption of the teeth. If the missing tooth is not replaced more teeth may be eventually lost due to abnormal forces exerted during chewing food.

Benefits of crown and bridge treatment

  • Restores the missing tooth, which leads to better chewing, speech and smile in case of front teeth involvement.
  • Prevents abnormal forces and stress on the remaining teeth.
  • Prevents supra-eruption- up or down movement of the teeth in opposing arch.
  • Prevents shifting and tilting of neighbouring teeth.
